About
Interactive Institute Umeå is an interaction design research lab focusing on experimental, radical interaction design for use in extreme environments. Organizationally, we belong to the Swedish IT-research institute Interactive Institute that seeks to combine art and design with deep technology know-how to produce innovative new digital products, services, and environments. During 2009 and 2010, we have carried out a number of large interaction design projects in one such extreme environment in particular–the industrial environment–together with collaborators such as ABB, SCA, and ProcessIT Innovations.
With our main office in the brand new Artistic Campus, Interactive Institute Umeå has strong ties to and help shape the lively and creative Interaction Design and Human-Computer Interaction research environment at Umeå University, Sweden. We’re funded by Swedish ICT Research AB, Umeå University, ABB Corporate Research, Vinnova, and Process IT Innovations.
In terms of research, our work primarily intends to impact the Interaction Design (IxD) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) communities. We’re prototype-oriented, i.e. all our projects involve designing and building stuff that works. The lab notes posten on this blog are used to showcase what we do as well as to document it for ourselves.
Right now, we’re working on stuff like seamless interaction between mobile and stationary devices, new kinds of indoor location awareness techniques, multimodal interaction techniques using the touch sense, and an array of different multitouch surfaces for industrial application.
